A gunner (normally a corporal) with a well-trained crew of seven cannoneers could load and fire a 12-pound Napoleon howitzer at a rate of two shots a minute. Artillery was most lethal on the defensive. The Napoleon could hurl solid shot as far as 1,680 yards, and exploding shells at intermediate ranges. When enemy infantry closed to 200 yards, artillerymen switched to canister, converting their pieces into giant shotguns.
